OU honors alumni and community members at awards banquet

As part of its annual Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, Oakland University recognized alumni and friends who have achieved success in business, community services, volunteerism and other areas on October 5, at its 24th annual Alumni Awards Banquet.   

OU alumnus Bryan K. Barnett, Mayor of Rochester Hills and Chair of the Oakland University Alumni Association Board of Directors, delivered welcoming remarks, and OU Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Greg Kampe, served as Master of Ceremonies. 

This year’s recipients are:

Distinguished Alumni Service Award

The Distinguished Alumni Service Award is Oakland’s highest alumni honor. It recognizes peerless volunteer leadership in service to OU or its alumni association.

Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award
Malcom Dunbar, CSP, MSSM
Vice President Environmental Health and Safety, Edward C. Levy Co. Detroit

The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award recognizes outstanding professional achievement or contribution to the community.

Odyssey Award
Constance O’Malley, RN, BSN, MHSA, FACHE
President, Beaumont Hospital – Farmington Hills

The Odyssey Award honors alumni whose lives exemplify Oakland University’s motto to “seek virtue and knowledge.”

Spirit Award
Ken McCarter
Executive in Residence and Adjunct Professor, School of Business Administration
Vice President of Labor Relations, Chrysler (retired)

The Spirit Award recognizes exemplary volunteer service to the university.

Alumni Community Service Award
Sharman Cobb-Davenport

CEO, Turning Point

The Alumni Community Service Award recognizes distinctive service of a humanitarian nature or citizenship through community, public, or OU service activities.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award

The Outstanding Young Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated the worth of their education through their post-college achievements and, generally, have graduated within the last ten years.

Honorary Alumni Award

Robert Gaylor
Librarian, Kresge Library, Oakland University

The Honorary Alumni Awards are given to individuals who have not graduated from OU, but who have given outstanding service to the university.

Pioneer Award

The Pioneer Award honors a group of individuals who have made significant contributions that led to the growth and excellence of Oakland University.
